Free - The Three Judges
"All will be lost."
I turned around.
"But Balance-"
My 'Big Brother' looked at me in the eye.
"Community, we can't keep going like this. The balance will go out of control. I have to find the source of the power. It could be one of the 8 Great Sins." Balance put a hand on my shoulder.
"Please, Comm. Be good and serve Mercy well. I will be back."
"Wait, no! Balance! BALANCE!!!"
With a swish of his cape...
He walked away.

{GASP!}
I woke up in my bed, but I heard footsteps from somewhere.
"Hello?" I called.
"Community? You're up?" It was Mercy!
"Mercy! Good morning!" A young lady came into my room. She gave me the warmest smile I've ever seen.
"Commy, you look tired. Do you want another hour? I can handle it." she asked me. I quickly shook my head.
"No, Mercy, I'll be fine. After all, if the first Case ends up with the person being Spared, I must bring the Community Work Tab."

I rubbed my eye socket. Mercy is far too caring. She's the kindest of the three Great Judges. Equality keeps the middle line. Justice is all about putting the Accused to Death Penalties, and Mercy? Oh, poor Mercy! She's the kindest Judge and she's always getting bullied by Justice. She wants all the Accused to be forgiven and Spared, but Equality keeps telling her sometimes mercy isn't the way.
"If you say so. But if you feel drained, tell me. I'll take over. After all, Equality has been doing that for-" she stopped, I felt my chest tighten.
Balance...
Balance, Equality's Helper, has been away for years. He's been trying to find the source of a great, unstable power. He has to keep the balance, and if that's what needs to be done, he doesn't mind.
I felt my eyesockets burn and my face went wet. Balance was like a big brother to me... I miss him so much...
I felt something block the sun, or something like that. Mercy's hand was against me. Judges are actually bigger than anyone, and we look like small plush toys next to them.
"Community, if you are ready, we must go to the Judgement Hall." Mercy picked me up. She's always like this.
"Mercy! Please no!" I laughed. She carried me to the Judgement Hall, were the three symbols were carved on the backs of three thrones. One was a libra, the beam balance with a crystal on it. That was Equality. One was a sword with blood on it. Justice's throne. I smiled seeing the symbol of a heart with angel's wings, Mercy's symbol. She sat on her throne and I stood on her arm rest, ready to start the Judgements.

Equality came in and was followed by Justice. I flinched as Execution, Justice's Helper, entered. He smirked at me and waved his Death Blade,
a giant sword used to cut the Accused's head.
I suddenly wished I took Mercy's offer.
I hid behind Mercy's sleeve and shook badly.
If only Balance was here... He would make everything better.
"Commy, Commy, it's ok. I won't let E hurt you." Mercy held me in her arms. She's so good, she makes Equality seem heartless.
Justice huffed and sat at the left side. Equality took the throne in the middle. I perked up as the first Accused was brought in by the Guard. He was a scraggly man with his hands bound behind his back. His hair was a mess and he looked pale and dirty. His clothes looked like he was from a rubbish.
"Accused Kern Beiner. Aged 34. Accused for stealing bread."
Bread?
They get Judged for stealing BREAD?
What?
"Kern Beiner." I heard Equality speak. "State your plea."
"Guilty, for stealing bread, yes. But for a good reason." Kern Beiner said, his tone laced with regret.
"State your reason." Equality said, his eyesockets narrowing. I felt my bones rattle with worry.
"I was hungry, and had no money with me. I lost my job recently and struggled to pay my housing rent. I hadn't eaten in days, and if I didn't steal that piece of bread-"
Justice stood up.
"But think of the bread seller, who earns his money from that bread. He also struggles the same as you. Why must HE suffer cause of YOUR problems? You have no solid reason and therefore must be Executed."
Equality raised his hand.
"Despite Justice's statement being true, I believe that this man's background is legible for redemption. I hereby announce the Accused - Spared."
I felt as if Balance had come back.
Mercy stood up. "As the Judge of Mercy, I sentence you to a year of assistance of the bread seller you stole bread from."
I jumped down from the arm rest and grabbed the man by his arm. I slowly took him to a mirror and a shop with tons of cakes and bread showed on it. I slowly led the man into the mirror and we were taken to the shop. I introduced the man to the bread seller and immediately he was set up for a job making bread.
I passed the mirror and back into the Judgement Hall. We Spared the first Accused! How amazing!
I looked at Mercy, who seemed happy for the first time in weeks. It has been 3 weeks since we Spared any of the Accused.
I felt cold as Justice stood up and turned toward Mercy as Equality left the Hall.
"Mercy." the Judge started. "I believe that this round you were only lucky. If Equality had seen what a thief could do, he would surely let ME hold the Judgement. You are NOTHING, understand? You merely are here to 'keep the balance', which I believe is unnecessary. So leave the Judging to me and Equality. Do you get me, Freak?"
My felt my vision blur as my eyelights grew smaller.
Mercy looked dejected, and despite my poor vision, I could see tears in her eyes. She fidgeted in her seat and Justice sat down.
I slowly approached her, scared to make her worse. I carefully grabbed her long sleeve and climbed up to the arm rest. "Mercy?" I asked. She was shaking and she looked at me with the look she had when Theodore Henning, the last Executed Accused, was Executed. "Oh Community, if only everyone can be Spared... They all deserve mercy." I felt really bad. Why is Justice so mean to her? Is it because we're all skeletons and she's the only Shifter? Is it because she's a girl? Oh please, someone tell me why!
"Oh Mercy, I think you're right. If only we can Spare them all..." I felt pity for all the Executed.
