A momentous moment in the history of Malaysia
"Go to sleep early today, we don't know whether we have holiday or not." my mother told me on Ron Day (A.K.A. Wednesday). It was supposed to be GE14, the government election for the new Prime Minister, followed by the big announcement: Who will become the new government.
There are three parties, BN (Barisan Nasional), PH (Pakatan Harapan) and PAS (Malaysian Islamic Party). Each party wished to win the great election, hoping they could be the next Prime Minister.
Can you believe this though: The leader of Pakatan Harapan, the Opposition, is the old Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir?!
I was busy doing my work, my brother was upstairs doing his. My parents went to join the election around lunchtime. (They originally wanted to do it in the morning, but too many people.)
I saw their fingers with the special indelible ink on when they came back, reminding me of a joke I once heard of.
"Careful, or you might turn black!" I laughed.
My parents didn't get it.
My brother and I packed our bags to get ready for school the next day, and my brother set the alarm clock.
We wanted to wait for 10 pm to know which party won, but they didn't reveal it yet even at 10 pm, so we had no choice. We went to bed.
"Jeje! Jeje! Wake up!"
I woke up to my brother calling me the next day.
"...?" I was very, very blur.
"Looks like Pakatan won."
"How...can you tell...?" I asked him/
"Mom said if Pakatan won, she would turn off the alarm."
It dawned upon me he was right. Despite me thinking he just forgot to turn on the alarm, he had that one answer that proved the results.
It was the biggest change in Malaysia history.
For 60 years since our Independence, BN had always been the Chosen One. They were great, but that was in the past.
After the Age of Corruption started, Malaysia started to plummet to the point we felt like we could never rise again.
But when Pakatan won, we felt like there was a new hope. A new light. We felt like...
We felt like with Pakatan Harapan, there was HARAPAN that they can make Malaysia great again.

(Yeap, just like that.)
