What Will Teenagers Be Like In 100 Years?
(Note: This is not part of the 'Breaking The Silence' story but a chapter on its own, although the characters are involved. In this one, all of them are teens, even the teachers and Principal.)
Lynx woke up early today. Her robot helper, 1NT3LL, was already at the doorway waiting.
"Good morning, Lynx. I already got your clothes. Come on, get changed. Your mother is waiting." "Alright, alright. I'll be down in a sec, Int." she said groggily.
It was the year 2118. 50 years ago, the atmosphere thinned to a dangerous point, the government had no choice but to ask NASA to build a special barrier around the entire Earth to protect them from further damage.
30 years ago, the last animal went extinct.
Just 20 years ago, the last tree was cut down.
Lynx went to the bathroom to shower, which was antiseptic fumes. The water on Earth was so dirty and chemically poisoned that it was too dangerous to use at all. She then went to clean her teeth with a special paste that kills harmful bacteria. It was edible and since it tasted like strawberry, she swallowed it.
She then went to the bed and grabbed her clothes: A jumpsuit with a pair of boots. She quickly changed and went down for breakfast.
Now, you may be wondering, if the water on Earth is polluted, how do they get hydrated?
Well, it may be polluted on Earth, but some scientists have found special elements in air to form water, like rain. If used for drinking it could offer the whole world, but it wasn't enough to provide for showers and washing, so other methods were used.
"Ah, there you are, dear. Come on, eat your breakfast." her mother said in a tinkling voice. She sat at the table. 1NT3LL put two pellets on a plate and added water. The pellets immediately formed into bread. It was one of the special GM alternatives to real food. 1NT3LL then put a special paste on the plate and turned around. "Hey Lynx, would you like ham or bacon?" "Um...both?" she asked cheekily. "Now, Lynx. You know you can have only one." "Ok, ok...bacon." Lynx pouted. 1NT3LL poured some powder from a bottle marked 'BACON' onto the paste, and the paste turned into the said food right away. "Could I have some eggs?" she requested. "Hm...What do you suggest, Intell?" Lynx's mother asked. "Well, to make sure she doesn't purge due to the chemicals...I say no. But you can have some tomorrow, Lynx." "Sigh...Fine." Lynx raised the white flag.
After breakfast, Lynx packed her new Delta -1 screenbook and headed off to school.
The absence of trees meant no paper, so they all use special paper thin screens as book for both reading and writing. It's called a 'screenbook'.
School was just a teleport away. Yes, you heard me right. A teleport away. Teleportation pads were placed on the front lawn so they could travel anywhere with just the snap of their fingers.
Lynx laughed as she jumped down from the teleportation pad. She just slapped Ink, one of the friends on the back of his head when he didn't notice. Teleportation also meant that when two or more people do it at the same time to the same location, the systems collide and you get to meet each other.
"Wildcat." someone called. Lynx turned around. "Night." she chuckled in reply. Her best friend, Nightmare loved to call her 'Wildcat'. His brother Dream preferred the term 'Kitty Cat'. Ink called her 'Paint in the tail' (It's a pun nickname). Blue, Ink's best friend seemed to love the name 'Lynxy'.
"What class is first?" Lynx was the one to break the ice. "English." Lynx suppressed a groan. She had to deal with both Josh and Undyne, the two bullies in school.
Oh well.
Lynx carefully pushed the metal door to the dim room open. She was greeted with a flying spitwad to the back of neck. She shuddered. Undyne snickered, holding the striped straw from that drink she had. Just then, a figured popped up, but Lynx hadn't noticed she was standing in the way, and all they could see was Lynx fused with Mr. Jenner, their English teacher.
"Psssssst!!" Nightmare whispered. "...?" Lynx looked at him. "Your standing on..." She jumped and got off the pad. The green figure cleared his throat. "Ok class, today, we will be learning about...'stars'."
"Lynx, please be careful where you stand next time!" Nightmare scolded. "It's weird seeing people combined with a hologram." he added, taking a bite out of his egg sandwich.
"..."
She didn't respond.
"Hey, you listening?" Nightmare looked to her.
She was looking at a picture.
"Hey, wh-" he stopped dead in his tracks.
In the picture was a girl and a boy, flowers braided in their hair.
Lynx and her brother.
Lynx's brother, Kagerou, was killed along with their father in a convention on the environment.
Oh Heavens, the boy was only 4 back then.
"They didn't believe when Daddy said there was a way to restore Earth. They gave up, and sacrificed two innocent lives!" her fist turned white from clenching.
"Hey, Wildcat..." Nightmare put a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"I know you're angry, but please...calm down...I'm sure they will believe. They will listen...Eventually." he said softly.
"I just...wanna hold him again..." her hand swept over the face of the boy.

"Processing...stars look like pointy figures, shining due to artificial luminescence."
"No...real stars."
"Real stars? Hmm...that's hard. Processing..."
"I heard...they are beautiful...They guide our ancestors at night and they even had names..." Lynx sighed.
"Gee...I'm sorry...but we can't see those stars with the barrier..." "It's not your fault...but...I just wish..."
"Yes?"
"I just wish I could see the real stars...even if just for a second."
